World-class piping by Dr. Jack Taylor (Aboyne, Scotland), Bruce Gandy (Halifax, Nova Scotia) and Eric Ouellette (Coventry, Connecticut). The evening will be a benefit for the Nicol-Brown Amateur Invitational Competition, and a welcoming reception for the competitors.

The 2011 Nicol-Brown Contest

Saturday, October 8, 2011 - 10:00 am to 7:00 pm

Ten of the finest Amateur pipers from across North America were selected to play in an elite invitational contest with three events: 6/8 Marches, Piobaireachd and MSR. The contest is dedicated annually to the memory of Robert U. Brown and Robert B. Nicol.

Dr. Jack Taylor from Aboyne, Scotland and Bruce Gandy from Halifax, Nova Scotia judged the 2011 contests. Eric Ouellette had the privilege of sharing the bench with them as an unofficial apprentice judge.

Master Class

Nicol-Brown competitors were given the privilege of receiving instruction from Dr. Jack Taylor, President of the Piobaireachd Society, and the members of the EUSPBA judging panel were encouraged to observe this master class. Topics included musical expression, technique, and improving musicianship toward the professional level of piping. All pipers were welcome to sit in on the morning session of this advanced class.

Members of the EUSPBA Judging Panel were encouraged to attend a follow-up session with Dr. Jack Taylor, who led a discussion on the art of judging piping.
